Bill Humphreys :: The Real Bike Guy

Here is Bill introducing the Raleigh Boys Team at the recent U S Bicycling Hall of Fame, “Special Recognition,” Ceremony.

There’s a Native American saying, “Those who tell the stories rule the world.” As technology increasingly intertwines us, I believe that’s increasingly true. It’s our job as businesses and leaders to connect people and make sure the best, inspirational stories are told.

Bill is a sought-after impact speaker/storyteller for bike clubs, civic groups, schools, and corporations on the recent history of Cycling and the audacious life he has lived. Endorsed by the US Bicycling Hall of Fame.

“US cycling has come far since Bill Humphreys took part in the 1973 Tour of Ireland, where I was the chief commissaire. He really has been there and done that in the years that have ensued. You will really enjoy his humorous style of lecture, and my advice is that if you have the chance to listen to one of his talks – then take it! The evening will fly by.” Phil Liggett ESPN & NBC Cycling Broadcaster 50 years.

Introducing Greg LeMond

“Bill was and remains the consummate USA cycling diplomat who never retired. When the dust settles, we will note the performance of the riders and applaud the tireless par excellence contributions of Bill Humphreys who has kept the light on in our sport for so many years.”  John Howard, 3-time Olympic Cyclist, Ironman Winner.

After three years of competing internationally I was selected to be the Junior National Team Coach and several of my young riders would go on to win, Gold Medals and The Tour de France.

I used that same discipline and dedication acquired as an athlete and  coach to complete my college degree in Sports Management at age 50 and land a job at Bicycling Magazine.

Years later when I still needed to support my family and corporate America was not hiring people my age, I became an over the road truck driver, from age 67 to 75. I later secured a great sales job that lasted 5 years.

During that time, I was able to recover from my time as a truck driver by getting my health and fitness back in time to ride my bike up Mount Washington Toll Road and medal in the Gravel World Championships, at age 80.

Whatever type of speech is needed by your organization, I have a story that can be applied to many types of audiences, whether it be a new corporate philosophy, a new product launch, a national sales meeting, or an annual awards banquet.

Whether your goal is to get people motivated, entertained, or informed, I have the real-life experience of failure and success as a blue-collar worker, athlete, coach, student, truck driver and salesman to bring significant meaning and clarity to those seated before me.

CRCofA Speakers Program

As the oldest and most successful club in America, founded in 1891, CRCofA has had a multitude of terrific cyclists, many of whom have been inducted into the US Bicycling Hall of Fame.

  • Bill Humphreys is part of the educational outreach speakers’ program.
  • Motivational public speaking — Bill is known as a historian of cycling in the Modern Era which dates back to the late 1960’s. All of his talks will refer to this era… regardless of whether it’s a cycling audience or not.
  • “The lack of knowledge on our cycling history among the current demographic of riders is astounding as you know and I am always on the lookout for ways to educate cyclists about how we got to where we are today.”
  • Bill will provide yearly updates about his outreach.
